Overview
Here is a 12V to 24V Voltage Doubler Circuit. The circuit is required when we need High voltage DC supply from the Low voltage input supply. Example if you have 12V battery and you need 24V supply from it, then this circuit will help you. You don’t need to implement a new power supply source, simply you can use a Voltage Doubler circuit.
Earlier we built Voltage Doubler Circuit using 555 Timer IC. But this circuit shown below will provide High voltage DC supply from Low voltage input AC supply.
Components Required
Following are the components required for the circuit.
1. Step down Transformer 230V AC to 12V AC / 1 Amps
2. 1N4007 Bridge Rectifier module – 4
3. 2200µF Electrolytic Capacitor – 2
4. 4700µF Electrolytic Capacitor – 1
5. Connecting Wires
12V to 24V Voltage Doubler Circuit
Here we taken 12V AC supply from Step down transformer and convert it into DC supply by a bridge rectifier. The voltage is fed to a pair of electrolytic capacitors 2200uF connected in series. Then the output is again fed to
4700uF Capacitor.
Working of the Circuit
This Voltage Doubler provides high voltage by charging and discharging the high-value electrolytic capacitor. To start designing the circuit you need to decide on the input and output voltage first. Then using the formulae below we can calculate the value of the electrolytic capacitor.
|
1 |
Vr = t*I/C |
where,
Vr = ripple voltage
I = load current
t = half-period
Apart from all this, there are so many other different methods to calculate voltage doubler circuit capacitor value. Result of the voltage doubler will be 2Vin which is the double of the input voltage. Capacitors C1 and C2 are charging for both positive and negative cycles and then its Discharging voltage makes C3 charge above the DC supply input and it appears at the output load in the form of 2Vin as a double voltage.
Circuit Simulation & Output
We simulated the circuit in proteus and got the required result as shown in the screenshot below. The input voltage got doubled.
