Introduction to Dual Op Amp IC LM358
LM358 IC is a dual operational amplifier integrated circuit with two Op-Amp powered by a common power supply. It consists of two independent compensated operational amplifiers with low power and high gain frequency.
LM358 is specially designed to operate from a single supply over a wide range of voltage. It is more flexible for low voltage AC and moderate voltage DC applications. LM358 is available in a cheap-sized package so it is widely used in real-life applications including transducer amplifier, DC gain block, active filter, and conventional op-amp circuit design. LM358 IC can handle 3V- 32V DC supply and source up to 20 mA per channel.
In this guide, we will learn about the Dual Op-Amp LM358 basics, characteristics, circuits, working, pins configuration & Applications. You can go through the Op-Amp IC 741 to learn more about the operational amplifier.

- Pin1 and pin8 are the output of the comparator
- Pin2 and pin6 are inverting input.
- Pin3 and pin5 are non-inverting inputs
- Pin4 is the GND terminal
- Pin8 is VCC+/positive supply
All the pins of LM358 IC along with their sequence number are given in the tabular diagram shown below.
LM358 Operating Principle & Working
In LM358, Pin 8 is the main power supply input. If we want to use LM358 as a comparator, we can give input voltage from 3V to 32V. If we want to use the LM358 as an operational amplifier then we will give the supply voltage from ±1.5V to ±16V. LM358 contains two operation amplifiers (A&B as in the pin diagram) where the input of the first amplifier (A) is pin 2 and pin 3 and the output is pin 1. If we want to use the second amplifier (B), then the input for this amplifier is at pins 5 and 6 and the output is at pin 7.
For the comparison of two signals, we will give one signal at pin 2 and the other signal at pin 3. The voltage of pin 2 will be compared with that of pin 3, and the voltage of pin 6 is compared with that of pin 5, corresponding to two independent outputs: Output A and Output B.
When the input at Non-inverting input A (+) at pin 3 is greater than the input at Inverting input A (-) at pin 2, the output of op-amp A will be high. Similarly, When the input at Non-inverting Input B (+) at pin 5 is greater than the input at Inverting Input B (-) at pin 6, the output of op-amp B will also be high.
On the other hand, when the input at Non-inverting Input A (+) at pin 3 is less than the input at Inverting Input A (-) at pin 2, the output of op Amp A will be low. Similarly, when the input at Non-inverting Input B (+) at pin 5 is less than the input at Inverting Input B (-) at pin 6, the output of op-amp B will also be low.
No pull-up resistor is required at the output of LM358.
